DEBRA DOMINGOS
ARTIST STATEMENT
For as long as I can remember I was keenly in tune with nature. I spent my days observing colors, patterns, lines and natural forms. I was attracted to Florida's old cypress roots and hanging mosses, the gills of mushrooms found in the woods and the rows of mussel shells poking out of the boggy saltwater marshes of the Great South Bay. I was fascinated by the movement of shoaling fish and the murmuration of starlings in the sky. Needless to say, I daydreamed a lot and doodled endlessly covering every notebook I owned.
Over time those doodles became my art language. The weight and fluidity of my lines and brush strokes began to mesh with the emotional connection I experience with color and natural forms. My paintings/subjects, while mostly done in the studio, have lead me to the bays, gardens and woods that I so love to collect specimens and reference photos. My hope is to invite the viewer to “select pause” and observe the lyrical line and rhythm that I have teased out of my love affair with the natural world.
